Dr. Aweng P. M. Garang Joins the National Bureau of Statistics as National Statistician
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is pleased to announce the engagement of Dr. Aweng P. M. Garang as National Statistician. Dr. Aweng is a South Sudan national and a faculty researcher at SOAS University of London, where his work focuses on global finance, macroeconomic analysis, development economics, digital finance innovations, enterprise data, spatial econometrics, and Africa's development policy challenges.
Funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and managed by UNDP, the current arrangement enables Dr. Aweng to provide technical expertise in support of improving the national statistical system, with emphasis on the Aid Information Management System (AIMS), as well as selected macroeconomic frameworks. In this role, Dr. Aweng will provide high-quality statistical support to the National Bureau of Statistics by collecting, analyzing, and interpreting economic, social, and demographic data to inform evidence-based policy formulation.
Dr. Aweng brings strong academic training and extensive applied research experience to this engagement. He holds a PhD in Economics from Erciyes University, an M.Sc. in Economics and Econometrics from the University of Kent, an MSc in Accounting and Finance from Ndejje University, and a BA in Economics from Ndejje University. His professional background includes research roles at SOAS, University of London, the University of Kent, the Office of the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and Big Win Philanthropy, where he contributed to the AfDB-AMALI Municipal Finance Project. His experience spans macroeconomic research, econometric modelling, development finance, public policy analysis, debt and financial markets, municipal finance, and evidence-based policy advisory work.
The leadership of the National Bureau of Statistics is excited to welcome Dr. Aweng to this important assignment and is grateful to the African Development Bank, through the United Nations Development Programme, for this momentous support. This engagement marks an important step in strengthening South Sudan's statistical capacity and enhancing the evidence base for national planning, policy formulation, and development coordination.
